overthewire: wargames and more -practicing hacking legally

You might have heard about CTFs -(capturing the flags) but have you heard of Wargames? Probably not. When I started in this field, I did not find any resource to begin with. But my interest in the field and generous help from my peers, I was able to find a way! Here I am sharing my journey from a noob to umm… still a noob :P but with some more experience in the field!

Intro

I was one of those who get excited by the term “HACKING”. Bollywood movies showing red colored “Access Denied” and “Access Granted” screens fascinated me. That’s when it all started. I came across https://null-byte.wonderhowto.com/ while searching for so called Wi-Fi hacking, the black side of hacking. I wasn’t really fascinated with dictionary attacks but monitor mode, handshakes were something new for me.

The wargames offered by the OverTheWire community can help you to learn and practice security concepts in the form of fun-filled games.
To find out more about a certain wargame, just visit its page linked from the menu on the left.

Suggested order to play the games in

  1. Bandit
  2. Leviathan or Natas or Krypton
  3. Narnia
  4. Behemoth
  5. Utumno
  6. Maze

Each shell game has its own SSH port

Information about how to connect to each game using SSH, is provided in the top left corner of the page. Keep in mind that every game uses a different SSH port.

2.CTFTIME.ORG

There are a lot of Capture The Flag (CTF) competitions in our days, some of them have excelent tasks, but in most cases they’re forgotten just after the CTF finished. We decided to make some kind of CTF archive and of course, it’ll be too boring to have just an archive, so we made a place, where you can get some another CTF-related info — current overall Capture The Flag team rating, per-team statistics etc.

3.HACKING-LAB.ORG

4.HackThisSite.org

Introduction

Hack This Site is a free training ground for users to test and expand their hacking skills. Our community is dedicated to facilitating an open learning environment by providing a series of hacking challenges, articles, resources, and discussion of the latest happenings in hacker culture. We are an online movement of artists, activists, hackers and anarchists who are organizing to create new worlds.

This guide is an introduction to the site, community, philosophy and project organization. This project is entirely what you make of it. We encourage people to take an active role in the development of this community and to copy and redistribute this guide on their own.

Hacking Philosophy

We believe everyone should have free access to all information. Hacking should not be a privileged skill — everyone should have the opportunity to learn about computer security in the age of technology. We seek to facilitate a free and open training ground where people can test and expand their skills in a legal and realistic environment.

Ethics

Considering that several of the hacking challenges are simulated web defacements, the question of the ethics of hacking is repeatedly brought up. We like to consider hacking itself to be a tool, a skill which in itself is neutral, a means without end. It can be used for good (for the benefit of all) or bad (mindless destruction or theft). We do not encourage negative use of the information we provide. We are more concerned with the greater risks of not distributing this information and are ready to accept the consequences.

5.0XF.at

What’s 0xf.at?

0xf.at (or oxfat it you prefer) is a website without logins or ads where you can solve password-riddles (so called hackits).

This is a tribute site to the old Starfleet Academy Hackits site which has been offline for many years now.
